If we look for the meaning of the term resilience, this is what we find: “A living being's ability to adapt to a disturbing agent or an adverse state or situation”; In other words, we can then understand it as the capacity we have to assume, with flexibility, extreme situations and overcome them.
Capacity..., I underline the word capacity, since any human capacity can be trained, we can develop in greater amounts. We are clear that we can train to run more and better, that if we practice cooking we can make more exquisite dishes. Well, with resilience, the same thing happens. So we can work on resilience with students.
What extreme situations can our students encounter in their day to day? When we speak of extreme or adverse situations, we do not necessarily speak of traumatic circumstances, we speak of situations that a child does not know how to manage and therefore puts him or her on the edge and in a situation of vulnerability.
Let's think for a moment about those stressful circumstances, perhaps a series of exams, a certain task that he cannot perform satisfactorily and becomes frustrated, a colleague who makes him pass regularly.
These situations that can occur in our classrooms, in our centers, It is very likely that they will be better managed if we emphasize working on that capacity that previously said we can train: resilience.
- A resilient child has these characteristics:
- Is known very well
- Trust your resources, as you know you have them and put them to use
- He knows how to set goals
- Is optimistic
- Know how to manage and prioritize
- Above all, he is a flexible person with a great capacity for acceptance.
Well, to promote these capacities also in our classrooms, I invite you to follow some guidelines to work on resilience with students:
1 - Teach them to be useful and to enhance their skills
Everyone should know that they are good for something, that they are good at one activity or another. That is why we must tell them individually and help them work on self-knowledge and enhance their predominant ability. In this way we also promote their self-esteem.
2 - Teach them to resolve conflicts
Viewing conflict as a learning opportunity, in which listening and empathy come into play. Here the figure of the student mediator is very important.
3 - Teach them kindness and gratitude
Doing favors and acknowledging them is a fundamental activity. We not only promote being generous and attentive to the other, but also the one who receives the favor and verbalizes it, tells it, is practicing gratuity.
As a mother and teacher, I believe that everything that is practiced and promoted in childhood, both at home and at school, will be an experience for the future of each of these children, which helps to ensure that they have more ability to put into practice tools and resources learned.
To finish and better understand the term resilience, I am going to give you an example: what happens if we take a wooden pencil and use force to bend it? It can be broken…, right? And it will never return to its original state, to its being or essence; but if we do the same with a bamboo…, despite its great flexibility and even if it breaks to a certain extent, it can be born again and be itself again.
Therefore we encourage our students to be authentic bamboo: strong and flexible, with the ability to overcome adversity.
